Summary
The Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) is a rapid survey methodology developed at the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH). It is a population based survey of visual impairment and eye care services among people aged 50 years and over.
The Afghanistan Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness 2010 covered the provinces of Badakhshan, Herat, and Laghman. From each province, a target sample size of 2,150 subjects were selected. Data were collected through household interviews and visual examinations. Subjects with vision-impairing cataract were questioned on barriers keeping them from pursuing cataract surgery, and subjects that had undergone cataract surgery were asked about their operations.
