Summary 

This AIS covered the Tanzania mainland only, but was designed to allow for estimates for some indicators by region and by rural and urban areas. It is not self-weighting at the national level. The intention of the survey was to provide a baseline on HIV infection and to improve the calibration of annual sentinel surveillance system data. Of the 6,901 households in the sample, 6,499 were successfully interviewed. Interviews were conducted with 6,863 women and 5,659 men. The survey included blood testing for HIV.
