South Africa Mortality and Causes of Death 2008
General Info
Mortality and causes of death in South Africa is an annual statistical release. It provides total number of deaths by cause and number of deaths by sex, age group, province, and ten leading causes in 2008. The statistics are based on death notification forms received from the Department of Home Affairs. In the coding process, the underlying causes were determined by using the Automated Classification of Medical Entities (ACME) software program.
In this release, the number of deaths excludes stillbirths. It also contains number of deaths for 1997-2007, including late registrations. The report acknowledges the following limitations of the data: underreporting, incomplete information on notification forms, and certification errors. Apart from this report, Statistics South Africa offers microdata on Causes of Death for 2008.
