South Africa Mortality and Causes of Death 2007
General Info
Mortality and causes of death in South Africa is an annual statistical release. It provides the total number of deaths by cause and number of deaths by sex, age group, province, and ten leading causes in 2007. The statistics are based on death notification forms received from the Department of Home Affairs. In the coding process, the underlying causes were determined by using the Automated Classification of Medical Entities (ACME) software program.
In this release, number of deaths excludes stillbirths. As stated in this report, the 2007 data have the following limitations: under-registration of rural areas and among children, misreporting of causes of death, and incompleteness of information on notification forms. Apart from this report, Statistics South Africa offers microdata on Causes of Death 2007.
